Alumni Spotlight: Steven Gonzalez
October 10, 2024
Steven Gonzalez's journey came full circle after graduating from St. Philip’s College (SPC) with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Air Conditioning and Heating in May 2023, and returning to the college as a full-time HVAC instructor.
After graduating high school in 2020, he began working at Maximum AC & Heating – a local construction company specializing in Heating Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). There, his supervisor encouraged him to pursue a formal education.
Steven started the St. Philip’s College HVAC program in the Fall 2021 semester while working full-time. His hands-on work experience allowed for a seamless transition into the program’s practical elements, but the time commitment and coursework were demanding. While managing a full-time job and full-time course load, he remained committed to his goal.
"It was stressful balancing a full-time job and night classes, but I knew I needed this degree to be successful," he shared. " My grandmother and my girlfriend at the time, who is now my wife, paid for my tuition during my first semester. This motivated me to keep going."
In May 2023, Steven walked the stage at Freeman Coliseum, his first formal commencement ceremony, after missing his high school graduation due to the pandemic.
Three months later, Steven obtained his contractor's license and returned to SPC as an adjunct instructor. By Fall 2023, he had secured a full-time teaching position.
"Everything I’ve accomplished, I did to make my grandma proud and to build a life with my wife," Steven said. “As someone who has been through the program, I understand the challenges my students face. I tell them I know they have other obligations, and I ask them to work with me to create a successful experience.”
